About the Committee

Legalization of Marijuana in the United States

Description:

The United States Senate is the upper house of the United States Congress, the legislative branch of the United States Government. Today, the Senate turns its attention to the issue of marijuana legalization, a topic that has grown far beyond a matter of policy and become a conversation about people’s lives, opportunities, and futures. Across the country, millions of Americans live under a mix of state and federal rules that often contradict each other, where one person can buy cannabis legally in their hometown while an another person, just a few miles away, can't do the same thing. As the nation continues to face questions about public health, criminal justice, economic fairness, and personal freedom, lawmakers must confront the real stories behind these policies: patients seeking relief, young people affected by criminal records, and local economies shaped by an emerging industry. The issue touches on federal–state relations, law enforcement practices, medical research barriers, and the broader question of how the law should evolve to reflect the realities of modern American life. In this session, the U.S. Senate will work to understand how marijuana policy can best uphold safety, fairness, and the values of a nation still learning how to balance change with responsibility.
